Borussia Dortmund Suffer Another Defeat, Increasing Pressure on Nuri Sahin – Bundesliga

Borussia Dortmund faced a challenging match in the Bundesliga on Saturday, succumbing to a 2-1 defeat against Augsburg and ending the game with only 10 players on the field. This marked their second loss in just five days, adding to a turbulent week for the team. The latest setback not only highlighted their struggle to maintain control in crucial moments but also exposed vulnerabilities that have left them fighting for stability in the league.

The match saw Alexis Claude-Maurice score twice for Augsburg, turning the game against Dortmund and dealing a further blow to the team’s morale. This loss came on the heels of a disappointing 5-2 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League, a match where Dortmund initially held a promising 2-0 lead. However, they couldn’t sustain their advantage, ultimately collapsing under Madrid’s pressure in the second half. The rapid succession of these two losses has been disheartening for both the players and fans alike, casting a shadow on their recent performances.

As last season’s Champions League finalists, Dortmund have struggled to replicate their previous form in the Bundesliga this season. They have yet to claim a victory in any of their four away games in the league, remaining winless on the road. With 13 points after nine games, they find themselves in seventh place, trailing behind the leading pack. In their past three league outings, they’ve suffered two losses, with only a single win to show, underlining their ongoing challenges and inconsistent form.

This recent loss has added to the mounting pressure on coach Nuri Sahin, who is in his first season at the helm. Sahin has faced considerable criticism, especially after the team’s performance against Real Madrid, where Dortmund let slip a 2-0 lead and allowed five goals in the second half alone. This collapse has drawn significant scrutiny, with many questioning Sahin’s tactics and ability to manage high-stakes games. The weight of expectations and these recent disappointments have made his debut season a demanding one, as he seeks to regain the team’s confidence and improve their form.

“Eighty percent possession does not necessarily mean more chances. We just did not get into the danger area often enough,” Sahin told a news conference.

Dortmund controlled over 70% of possession throughout the game but created very few scoring chances for more than an hour following their early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.

“[The] fact is for 80% possession we had far too few chances. We need to work on creating more chances,” Sahin said. “Our squad is not without experience and I expect all of us together, players and coaches, to face this current situation and go through it together.”

RB Leipzig provisionally took over top spot on 20 points with a 3-1 home victory over Freiburg. Bayern Munich, who are in second spot on 17, are in action at VfL Bochum on Sunday.

Dortmund began the game in ideal fashion, breaking quickly as Donyell Malen slotted in a goal just four minutes in, putting them ahead.

However, Dortmund’s attack offered little else in the remainder of the first half, and Augsburg leveled the score in the 25th minute with an unexpected strike. Claude-Maurice, left unchallenged by four defenders, found ample space and unleashed a powerful shot from 25 meters out to bring his team back into the match.

Making his first league start for Augsburg, the Frenchman added a second goal five minutes into the second half, completing Augsburg’s comeback by curling a precise low shot from the edge of the box.

As Dortmund look ahead to their German Cup match against VfL Wolfsburg next week, they suffered a setback in the final moments when substitute Almugera Kabar, on his Bundesliga debut, was sent off after receiving a second yellow card during stoppage time.

Dortmund also faced additional challenges with injuries, as both Waldemar Anton and Julian Ryerson had to be substituted due to knocks, adding to the team’s concerns.
