In a detailed and wide-ranging interview, Marco Reus delved into the reasons behind his decision to part ways with Borussia Dortmund and why he ultimately chose to continue his career in the United States. During the conversation, Reus reflected on the offers he received, including potential moves within Germany or to the lucrative football scene in Saudi Arabia. However, he explained that after carefully weighing his options, the opportunity to play in Major League Soccer with LA Galaxy was the most appealing for both his career and personal life. His choice to head to the U.S. represents a new chapter in his journey as a professional footballer, one that offers new experiences both on and off the pitch.
Reus’ departure from Borussia Dortmund marked the end of an era for both the club and its fans. Over the course of 12 years, he became a true icon and legend at the club, winning the hearts of the Black and Yellow faithful with his skill, leadership, and loyalty. His impact on the team and the city of Dortmund is undeniable, having played a pivotal role in numerous memorable moments and major achievements. When Reus made the decision to sign with LA Galaxy at the end of last season, it was not only the end of his long tenure with the club but also a significant moment for German football. His move to MLS symbolized the closing of a remarkable chapter in Borussia Dortmund’s history.
Despite the emotional farewell, Reus shared during the TOMorrow Business, Stars & Lifestyle podcast that his departure from Borussia Dortmund was not as difficult as he initially thought it would be. Although leaving behind the club where he spent over a decade and experienced many highs and lows could have been expected to be a heart-wrenching process, Reus explained that he had mentally prepared himself for the transition. He admitted that while saying goodbye was emotional, he had come to terms with the decision and was ready for the next stage of his career. His comments suggest that he felt a sense of closure and optimism about the future, helping to ease the emotional weight of leaving his beloved BVB.
“I had time to process the whole thing. I thought it would be harder. But it’s probably because it was foreseeable that it would come to an end,” Reus said, noting that his playing time declined in his last two seasons with the club.
“That’s when you realize that maybe it’s time for you toAt 35, Reus believes he still has a lot to offer – and he doesn’t feel his age is as important in the United States.
“In Germany, they say: ‘OK, he’s too old’. Here it’s different. Either you’re good or you’re not good, it has nothing to do with age,” he said.
While an offer from Saudi Arabia was a viable option for Marco Reus, he ultimately decided against it. Despite the financial incentives and the growing appeal of Saudi football, Reus felt that it wasn’t the right fit for him at this stage in his career. Instead, he opted to explore a different direction, focusing on a move that aligned more closely with his personal goals and long-term vision. This decision reflects his desire for a new challenge beyond just financial rewards, as he prioritized factors like lifestyle, professional growth, and the overall experience of playing in a different environment.
“In the end, we decided to prioritize life and the opportunity to continue building a business here, making new contacts and expanding our own horizons once again.
“When it comes to Saudi Arabia, I probably would have made ten times as much there. But I was never a person who put money first, I just wanted to be happy with my family.”
