Arsenal’s quest for the Premier League title encountered its first hurdle in a 1-1 draw against Brighton on Saturday following Declan Rice’s dismissal. Meanwhile, Aston Villa claimed a 2-1 away victory over Leicester. Both Arsenal and Brighton had started the season with maximum points from their first two matches, and the Gunners appeared poised for another win when Kai Havertz capitalized on a mistake by Lewis Dunk to score the opening goal. However, the match shifted dramatically just moments into the second half when Rice controversially received the first red card of his career.
The England midfielder was assessed to have kicked the ball away at a critical moment when Joel Veltman was getting ready to take a free-kick for Brighton. This impulsive action led to the player receiving a second yellow card, ultimately resulting in his dismissal from the match.
“I was amazed, amazed, amazed!” an outraged Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said. “Amazed because of how inconsistent decisions can be.
“In the first half, there are two incidents and nothing happens. Then, in a non-critical area, the ball hits Declan, he turns around, he doesn’t see the player coming and he touches the ball.”
Brighton swiftly capitalized on their numerical advantage when Joao Pedro converted the rebound after David Raya saved Yankuba Minteh’s shot.
Both teams had opportunities to secure a win, with Bart Verbruggen thwarting Havertz and Georginio Rutter heading wide for the visitors in the closing moments.
Ultimately, Arsenal had to settle for a draw, which could cost them valuable ground in the title race.

In other action, Villa rebounded from their loss to Arsenal last weekend, notching their second victory in three matches.

Ollie Watkins has yet to find the back of the net this season despite playing a pivotal role in helping England reach the Euro 2024 final. However, his substitute, Jhon Duran, has made a strong impression as the campaign unfolds. Duran’s performances have showcased his potential and provided a spark for the team, highlighting the depth of talent available to the squad as they look to make their mark this season.
Two minutes after coming for Watkins, the Colombian scored with a powerful header, providing Villa with crucial breathing room.
Although Facundo Buonanotte scored a goal for the Foxes, they continue to seek their first victory since returning to the Premier League.
Southampton has struggled to adjust to life in the top flight. Brentford comfortably defeated the Saints 3-1, with Bryan Mbeumo netting two goals.
Meanwhile, Everton faced another devastating setback in their final season at Goodison Park, as Bournemouth staged a dramatic comeback from 2-0 down in the 87th minute to secure a 3-2 victory.
At the start of the second half, two rapid goals from Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin had put the Toffees firmly in command.
However, Antoine Semenyo sparked a revival for Bournemouth, followed by Lewis Cook and Luis Sinisterra, who sealed the win and left Everton still searching for their first point of the season.
