Freddie Ljungberg ‘hopes’ Alexander Isak joins a Premier League giant like Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester City where he can ‘go to the absolute top’.
Since joining the Premier League in the summer of 2022, Alexander Isak has rapidly risen to prominence as one of the most highly regarded forwards in the division. The Swedish international wasted no time making his mark at St James’ Park, finding the back of the net consistently and reaching double digits in his debut season. His impressive performances in his first year set the stage for an even more prolific campaign last season, where he showcased his scoring prowess by netting 25 goals across all competitions. In the Premier League, he was outscored by only two players—Cole Palmer and Erling Haaland—highlighting his growing reputation as one of the league’s top attacking talents.
Despite the heightened interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, Newcastle United has managed to retain Isak’s services, resisting any significant bids from potential suitors. The Swedish forward has been consistently linked with transfers to elite clubs across the continent, but Newcastle has remained firm, keeping their star player in Tyneside amid growing speculation surrounding his future. For now, Isak continues to be an integral part of Newcastle’s squad, with the club determined to ward off any attempts to lure him away.
Freddie Ljungberg, a two-time Premier League winner with Arsenal and one of Sweden’s most respected football figures, has expressed his belief that Isak has the ability to reach new heights if he were to join one of England’s top teams. Ljungberg suggested that a move to clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, or Manchester City could take Isak’s game to an even higher level. He described his fellow Swede as “freaking special,” praising his exceptional talent and hinting at the potential for Isak to further develop into one of Europe’s elite forwards.
‘I like Isak. His top level is huge,’ the Arsenal legend told Swedish outlet Expressen.
‘He has these super top qualities that I, as a coach, might look for. I want players who have some super power, then you can put them in special situations and know that they will make a difference.

‘His top qualities are so freaking special that I think he can be even better. He could go all the way up to the absolute top because of the speed he has, the nice finishes and the understanding of the game.
‘This is the player for whom I want things to go so incredibly well. He seems so humble and down to earth, and it feels like he just wants to work hard and play football.
‘I really hope he can take the next step. Newcastle is a good club. There is nothing wrong with that.
‘But at some point I hope he goes to Arsenal, Chelsea or Man City where he can pour in goals. That’s what I hope.’
With Erling Haaland leading the line, Manchester City currently have no need for another striker, but both Arsenal and Chelsea showed interest in adding a top goalscorer during last summer’s transfer window. However, both clubs ultimately chose to hold off on new signings in that department, a decision that seems to have paid off, as Kai Havertz and Nicolas Jackson have both delivered strong performances for Arsenal and Chelsea, respectively, this season.
Alexander Isak, who has been sidelined for a month due to injury, is set to make his return this Saturday when Newcastle United take on Brighton at St James’ Park. His comeback is highly anticipated, as Newcastle look to build on their solid start to the season.
Eddie Howe’s side, who competed in the Champions League last season, have had an impressive opening to the campaign, losing just one of their first seven matches. As they prepare to face Brighton, Newcastle sit just outside the top four, with hopes of continuing their push for a place among the Premier League’s elite.
