Leandro Trossard made an immediate impact by scoring with his first touch after coming off the bench, leading Arsenal to a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on Saturday. Mikel Arteta’s team struggled to break through until Trossard’s arrival at Villa Park provided the spark they needed. His superb finish midway through the second half was followed by Thomas Partey’s late goal, which was facilitated by a crucial error from Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. This win marks Arsenal’s second consecutive victory and signals a strong start in their quest for the Premier League title, offering a much-needed boost for the north London club.
Villa’s 2-0 triumph over Arsenal in the final weeks of last season dealt a significant blow to the Gunners’ title hopes.
Additionally, Arsenal’s defeat at Villa Park last season was another damaging result. Ultimately, they ended the campaign just two points behind champions Manchester City. Having finished as runners-up to City for the past two years, Arsenal is eager to claim their first Premier League title since 2004.
After a solid 2-0 win against Wolves in their season opener, Mikel Arteta will have been heartened to witness his team’s resilience and determination in securing a hard-fought victory against Villa.
“We had to change momentum. We had a 10-minute gap when we didn’t get the rhythm and they were on top. They had the big chance and David Raya made an unbelievable save. It was the magic moment of the game,” Arteta said.
“Villa had a more defensive approach than we expected, but we adapted and the team played with a lot of courage.
“When you need individuals they stood up and they made themselves count. That’s why we won the game.”
Villa’s 2-1 victory at West Ham last weekend marked an ideal beginning to their season, which includes their first Champions League campaign since 1982-83.
However, this match served as a reality check for Unai Emery’s side, which aims to replicate its top-four finish from last season.
“We had our chance to score and had even better chances than them. If we score one goal then maybe we win the match,” Emery said.
“There’s still work to do. I accept the result because we are doing our way and trying to improve. The players will stay calm.”
Saka forced an early save from former Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez by cutting in from the right and delivering a low shot that the Argentine managed to tip away with a full-stretch dive.
Leon Bailey then capitalized on a lapse from Gabriel Magalhaes, setting up Ollie Watkins with a golden chance to give Villa the lead. Despite facing only Arsenal’s goalkeeper David Raya, Watkins squandered the opportunity by shooting wide from six yards, leaving Emery visibly frustrated.
Highlighting Arsenal’s ongoing need for another forward, Kai Havertz missed a close-range chance after being set up by Gabriel Martinelli.
In the second half, Villa seemed poised to break the deadlock when Amadou Onana’s deflected shot struck the bar and fell to Watkins. With the goal at his mercy, the England striker headed off target, allowing Raya to pull off a remarkable save and keep Arsenal in the game.
Moments later, Martinez made another impressive save, diving at Saka’s feet to block the Arsenal winger’s shot after Saka received a pass from Martin Odegaard.
Villa defender Ezri Konsa narrowly missed with a volley that went just wide of the far post, but Trossard delivered the crucial blow in the 67th minute.
Saka crossed from the touchline just before the ball went out of play. When Morgan Rogers challenged Havertz in the area, Trossard capitalized on the deflection, calmly slotting the ball past Martinez from 10 yards out.
Martinez had no chance with that goal, but he was at fault in the 77th minute when Partey received a pass from Saka and fired a low shot that trickled past Martinez’s poorly executed attempt at a save.
