Noni Madueke scored a brilliant hat-trick as Chelsea overwhelmed Wolves 6-2, marking Enzo Maresca’s first Premier League triumph as the Blues’ manager. Meanwhile, Newcastle salvaged a contentious 1-1 draw at Bournemouth on Sunday. Maresca, who took over from Mauricio Pochettino after leaving Leicester, had endured a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in his debut last weekend. Although Chelsea had previously secured a modest victory over Servette in a UEFA Conference League play-off, their explosive performance at Molineux genuinely showcased their attacking prowess under Maresca.
Noni Madueke scored a hat-trick as Chelsea thrashed Wolves 6-2, securing Enzo Maresca’s first Premier League victory as the Blues’ manager. On Sunday, Newcastle salvaged a disputed 1-1 draw at Bournemouth. Maresca, who joined Chelsea from Leicester to succeed Mauricio Pochettino, had previously experienced a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in his debut match. Although Chelsea’s season began with a modest UEFA Conference League play-off win over Servette, their emphatic display at Molineux demonstrated their attacking potential under Maresca.
Maresca’s team got off to an ideal start, scoring within 98 seconds. Matheus Cunha’s attempt to clear a corner inadvertently deflected towards Nicolas Jackson, who was left completely unmarked and made no mistake heading the ball into the net from six yards out.
Jackson’s goal sparked outrage among Wolves fans, who were already irked by Chelsea due to Noni Madueke’s critical review of Wolverhampton, which he posted and swiftly removed just hours before the match.
Madueke shared his location, which was Wolverhampton, in the post, which read “this place is s**t”.
He later shared: “Damn wrong Instagram account. You lot are too fast.”
Cunha hauled the hosts level in the 27th minute as the Brazilian forward tormented the Blues again after last season’s hat-trick at Stamford Bridge.
Moises Caicedo of Chelsea lost possession carelessly, allowing Rayan Ait-Nouri to advance and set up Cunha. The Brazilian forward’s powerful shot sped past Robert Sanchez, igniting a lively samba celebration.
In the 45th minute, Cole Palmer regained Chelsea’s lead. The England forward expertly controlled Jackson’s flick and delivered a stunning lob over Wolves’ goalkeeper, Jose Sa.
Seconds before the half-time whistle, Chelsea mishandled Ait-Nouri’s free-kick, allowing Toti to head the ball across to Jorgen Strand Larsen, who then tapped it in from close range.
However, the thrilling match tipped back in Chelsea’s favor in the 49th minute. Palmer delivered a pass to Madueke, whose shot took a deflection off Ait-Nouri and found the back of the net.
Nine minutes later, Madueke scored again, calmly slipping the ball between Sa’s legs after Palmer’s run exposed the vulnerable Wolves defense.
The 22-year-old completed his hat-trick with a near-identical finish to his previous goals, again converting a Palmer assist and silencing the jeering Wolves fans.
Joao Felix came on as a substitute to seal the rout in the 80th minute, with the Portuguese forward scoring on his Chelsea debut following his recent permanent transfer from Atletico Madrid earlier in the week.
Felix, who was on loan at Chelsea for the latter half of the 2022-23 season, fired a powerful shot into the top corner after being set up by former Wolves forward Pedro Neto.
At the Vitality Stadium, Newcastle fell behind after Joelinton mishandled the ball, allowing Marcus Tavernier to score from a low cross delivered by Antoine Semenyo in the 37th minute.
Eddie Howe’s side equalized in the 76th minute when Harvey Barnes delivered a precise cross, and Anthony Gordon converted from close range.
Bournemouth were outraged after being denied a stoppage-time winner, as VAR determined that Dango Ouattara had handled the ball before scoring with a header.
Later on Sunday, Arne Slot will oversee his first Premier League home game as Liverpool’s manager against Brentford. Slot, who was brought in from Feyenoord to succeed Jurgen Klopp, is stepping into the role after Klopp’s nine successful years at Anfield.
In Liverpool’s opening league match, the 45-year-old began his tenure with a 2-0 victory at Ipswich.
