Thiago Motta has arrived to lead Juventus’ transformation, but what else do the Bianconeri need in this summer’s transfer window?
With former Bologna coach Thiago Motta taking over from Massimiliano Allegri at Juventus this summer, there’s growing hope and expectation for a Serie A title challenge in 2024/25. However, the Italian giants’ transfer window has been relatively quiet.
Goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio has joined after two impressive seasons with Monza. He is expected to succeed the aging Wojciech Szczesny. Despite Szczesny’s 17 clean sheets last season, Juventus’ attacking play lacked excitement. However, they still managed to secure enough points for Champions League qualification.
Hellas Verona’s left-back Juan Cabal has been signed as a direct replacement for the outgoing Alex Sandro. Still, the real intrigue lies further up the pitch. Douglas Luiz, a penalty expert who scored twice directly from corner kicks, arrives from Aston Villa for €50 million. At the same time, Khephren Thuram joins Nice to continue his family’s footballing legacy.
Daniele Rugani was once seen as a rising star at Empoli. Still, at 30 years old, he has yet to fully live up to the potential that brought him to Turin. Under Thiago Motta, Bremer and Federico Gatti are expected to be the first-choice center-back pairing. Still, the next option is 33-year-old Danilo, who has spent most of his career playing as a full-back.
Throughout the summer, Juventus have pursued Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo. However, with Nice already allowing 19-year-old Khephren Thuram to leave for Italy, the French club may be reluctant to part with a player who has anchored their defense for four seasons.
Suppose a deal for Todibo doesn’t materialize. In that case, Juventus must quickly shift focus to alternative targets. Following the sale of Dean Huijsen to Bournemouth, there is a noticeable lack of quality depth in defense.
A glance at the Juventus squad reveals an abundance of central midfield options. Still, most play more functional roles, including newcomers Luiz, Thuram, and Manuel Locatelli. Meanwhile, Weston McKennie still seems likely to depart Turin.
Youngster Nicolo Fagioli possesses the talent to orchestrate attacks behind striker Dusan Vlahovic. Still, Juventus may need a more experienced playmaker to compete with Inter for the Scudetto. Teun Koopmeiners of Atalanta appears to be a realistic target, provided Juventus can agree on a suitable fee with La Dea.
If not, the Old Lady could reignite their interest in Genk’s Bilal El Khannouss once the Morocco international wraps up his involvement in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Previous summer transfer windows were dominated by rumors linking Dusan Vlahovic with a move away from Juventus, especially to top Premier League clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester United. The Serbian striker, known for his lethal finishing and physical presence, has been on the radar of Europe’s elite. However, following the 2023/24 campaign, there has been a noticeable absence of transfer speculation surrounding Vlahovic. This suggests that Juventus are firmly committed to retaining their 24-year-old star as the focal point of their attack, signaling that they view him as crucial to their ambitions in the upcoming season.
Despite Vlahovic’s status as a critical player, Juventus faces a potential issue with squad depth. Relying solely on Arkadiusz Milik as the backup striker going into the 2024/25 season raises some concerns. While Milik has proven to be a reliable option at times, having only one experienced forward as cover for Vlahovic is a risky strategy, particularly in a long, grueling campaign that includes Serie A, the Champions League, and domestic cup competitions.
Juventus actively explores additional attacking reinforcements, particularly on the flanks, to address this. Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi, a young and dynamic winger with blistering pace and dribbling skills, is widely expected to join the Bianconeri. Adeyemi’s versatility in playing both as a winger and a forward makes him an ideal fit to support Vlahovic by providing crosses from broad areas or operating as a secondary striker when needed.
In addition to Adeyemi, AS Roma winger Stephan El Shaarawy has emerged as a potential cut-price option. Though now 31, El Shaarawy still offers experience, creativity, and an eye for goal, qualities that could prove valuable in a supporting role. His ability to play on either wing would give Juventus more flexibility in attack. At the same time, his familiarity with Serie A could allow for a smooth transition into the team.
With these potential signings, Juventus is looking to provide Vlahovic with the support he needs while ensuring the team has the depth to compete on all fronts.
