Real Madrid have been crowned La Liga champions after Girona staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Barcelona 4-2. Needing a win to keep their slim title hopes alive following Madrid’s earlier victory over Cádiz, Barcelona faltered in a disastrous second half, conceding three goals in just nine minutes, effectively ending their title challenge. This result also secured Girona a top-four spot and a spot in the UEFA Champions League for the following season.
Portu’s explosive performance as a substitute was essential to Girona’s stunning victory. Trailing 2-1, he immediately scored with his first touch, finishing from close range after Artem Dovbyk squared the ball to him. Two minutes later, he set up Miguel Guiterrez for a deflected goal that put Girona ahead. Portu capped off his impressive display with a stunning volley from the edge of the area, which left Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen with no chance.
Before Portu’s introduction, it seemed Barcelona might secure the win, bolstered by goals from Andreas Christensen and Robert Lewandowski’s penalty that had them leading 2-1. With this result, Girona moved ahead of Barcelona with four matches left. At the same time, Real Madrid sits comfortably at the top, now 13 points clear.
While Girona’s title challenge faltered in the latter half of the season, their remarkable achievement in qualifying for next season’s Champions League cannot be overlooked. Coach Miguel emphasized this goal as their top priority before the match. With a solid 10-point cushion over fifth-place Athletic Bilbao and just four games remaining, they were in a strong position regardless of the outcome. Their season deserved a spectacular finish, and they certainly delivered in the second half.
Portu’s introduction was pivotal, but the entire team shone. Savio provided an exhilarating presence, and Artem Dovbyk led the attack with class and finesse. Both players have proven their worth at the highest level and should be critical components of Girona’s Champions League campaign. Their exciting style of play has been a thrilling addition to La Liga this season, making it fitting that they secured their spot in European football’s elite competition with such a memorable performance.
Before Portu’s introduction, a third goal for Barcelona felt imminent as Girona’s defensive structure appeared to unravel. Lamine Yamal had several opportunities on the right flank but failed to capitalize. Then Portu stepped onto the pitch, and everything changed.
His presence was immediately impactful; capitalizing on a dreadful backpass from Sergi Roberto, Portu positioned himself perfectly to support his center forward and net an easy goal. His assist for Girona’s second was even more impressive, showcasing his quick burst of speed and vision. He capped off his performance with a stunning volley that drew comparisons to Paolo Di Canio’s iconic strike for West Ham against Wimbledon. Portu nearly added another highlight late in the match, reaching the byline and, while at full speed, executing a remarkable backheel pass for Dovbyk, whose shot was cleared off the line.
