For the second consecutive year, executives from the K LEAGUE have embarked on a trip to Spain to partake in a valuable knowledge-sharing initiative with various LALIGA clubs. This journey is a significant aspect of the ongoing partnership agreement established between the two leagues, which aims to foster collaboration and mutual growth. During this visit, the CEOs had the opportunity to meet with officials from well-known clubs such as Villarreal CF, Valencia CF, and RCD Espanyol. These meetings were designed to facilitate the exchange of crucial insights and ideas, as well as to explore potential avenues for future collaboration that could benefit both leagues. In addition to these productive discussions, the K LEAGUE executives were able to attend a variety of matches, including those featuring LALIGA EA SPORTS, LALIGA HYPERMOTION, and Liga F. This immersive experience allowed them to witness the thrilling atmosphere and vibrant energy of LALIGA football firsthand, further enhancing their understanding of the league’s operational excellence and fan engagement strategies.
In the previous season, LALIGA and K LEAGUE took significant steps to reinforce their commitment to collaboration by officially extending their partnership agreement until the end of 2026. This renewal represents a major enhancement of their cooperative efforts, broadening the scope of their partnership beyond the initial focus areas. The updated agreement encompasses a wide range of initiatives, including not only competitions and training in specialized fields such as audiovisual production and financial fair play but also significant developments in women’s football, technology, and innovation. Additionally, the partnership emphasizes the importance of addressing key strategic issues that impact LALIGA, particularly initiatives aimed at combating hate and discrimination in sports. This commitment is showcased through campaigns like VS Racism and VS Bullying, which aim to promote inclusivity and respect within football and society as a whole.
The relationship between LALIGA and K LEAGUE clubs has historically been remarkably strong, rooted in mutual respect and shared goals. In years past, youth teams from prominent K LEAGUE clubs such as FC Seoul, Ulsan Hyundai, and Jeonbuk Hyundai have had the opportunity to compete against youth squads from established LALIGA clubs like Atlético de Madrid and CD Leganés. These friendly matches have not only fostered goodwill but also provided invaluable experience for young players. Moreover, LALIGA youth teams have been invited to participate in international tournaments hosted in South Korea, further enhancing cross-league relations. As we look toward 2024, there are plans for additional training sessions in Spain, where K LEAGUE coaches will have the chance to receive specialized training from LALIGA and club coaches. This initiative will serve to deepen the collaboration between the two leagues, solidifying their partnership and enriching the footballing experience for players and fans alike.
“We’re very proud of the work being carried out through the MOU (memorandum of understanding) with the K LEAGUE, which is bringing Spanish and Korean football closer together. We’ve been collaborating more closely for almost four years now, both through LALIGA and its clubs, and the synergies between the two competitions are driving progress in this regard,” said Sangwon Seo, LALIGA delegate in South Korea.
“First and foremost, we want to express enormous gratitude to LALIGA for organising this visit and to the clubs for welcoming us. This is our second consecutive year visiting LALIGA teams alongside the CEOs of our clubs, where we’ve been able to hear about the different business strategies of various teams first hand. Being able to have this experience with clubs such as Valencia CF, Villarreal CF and RCD Espanyol is very productive for K League clubs that want to keep improving to become more sustainable in the long term. We look forward to continuing this great strategic relationship with LALIGA for many years to come,” stated Yeon-Sang Cho, Secretary General of the K LEAGUE.
