This week, the main storyline in Spanish football was FC Barcelona’s dominant display in El Clásico, but there were several other notable developments as well, detailed below.
The first El Clásico of the season ended in a huge 4-0 victory for FC Barcelona. With an impressive second-half performance at the Bernabéu, they dismantled Real Madrid. Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring with two goals, followed by Lamine Yamal and Raphinha adding to Barça’s tally. This result widens the gap to six points over their arch-rivals.
With his two goals in El Clásico, Robert Lewandowski now has 14 league goals in just 11 games this season. He tops the Pichichi Trophy standings as La Liga’s top scorer and is currently leading the European Golden Shoe race, with three more goals than Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.
In another key match, Real Betis defeated Atlético de Madrid 1-0, with the only goal coming from a José María Giménez own goal in the fourth minute. This was just the second time in 26 games that Diego Simeone has lost to Betis in his coaching career.
Following Atlético de Madrid’s loss, Villarreal CF moved up to third place with their 2-1 away victory over Real Valladolid on Matchday 11. Goals from Thierno Barry and Ayoze Pérez propelled them up the standings, while Atlético fell to fourth.
UD Las Palmas enjoyed a remarkable week with two wins in five days under their new coach Diego Martínez. They first beat Valencia CF 3-2 away, followed by a 1-0 victory over Girona FC at home. Although they remain in the relegation zone, optimism is building with Martínez’s arrival and the recent improvement.
CA Osasuna have had an excellent start to the 2024/25 season. Despite losing longtime coach Jagoba Arrasate in the offseason, new coach Vicente Moreno has guided them to 18 points from 11 games, including Sunday’s 2-0 win at Real Sociedad. They currently sit in sixth place, occupying a European qualification spot.
Recently promoted CD Leganés claimed an impressive 3-0 victory over RC Celta on Matchday 11, lifting them up to 14th place and away from the relegation zone. This was their first win since August, providing a crucial three points for Los Pepineros.
October 22, 2024, became a historic date for Girona FC as they secured their first-ever victory in European competition with a 2-0 win over Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League. Following narrow defeats to PSG and Feyenoord, the win delighted fans at the Estadi Montilivi.
Both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona celebrated Champions League wins last week, each driven by a Brazilian hat-trick. Real Madrid came back from a 2-0 halftime deficit against Borussia Dortmund with three goals from Vinícius, winning 5-2. FC Barcelona, led by coach Hansi Flick, beat Bayern Munich 4-1, with Raphinha scoring three goals against his former club.
Matchday 14’s schedule was announced this week, confirming that the season’s first Basque Derby will be played on Sunday, November 24th, at 21:00 CET at San Mamés. Athletic Club and Real Sociedad will resume their historic rivalry in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.
