Hansi Flick says that although Lamine Yamal is on a “really fantastic path,” the 17-year-old needs to “keep his feet on the ground.” Yamal has already had an incredible career, having helped Spain win the Euro 2024 championship earlier this summer. He will report to Barcelona’s new manager, Flick, for this season. Flick believes the forward is capable of more.
Lamine Yamal, who “can still improve,” according to Hansi Flick, the new head coach of Barcelona, has no boundaries.
The 17-year-old recently had an incredible experience at the European Championships, helping Spain defeat England 2-1 in the final to win the title for a record fourth time.
It has been over a year since his club debut before he shot to international fame.
However, manager Xavi’s departure this summer will require him to adjust to a new Camp Nou hierarchy.
Former Bayern Munich manager Flick is taking charge, and he says he is eager to work with the young player.
“He has done a great job in the last year, he has improved a lot,” he said. “What he did in the Euro is unbelievable.”
“But great players maintain their performance and now it is necessary for him to keep his feet on the ground.”
“I think he is a great guy. I spoke with him before, when I arrived, and he is now in this team and of course, he gives us great moments but he can improve and make things better. He is on a really fantastic path.”
Yamal attended the renowned La Masia Academy in Barcelona.
He made his club debut in a 4-0 victory over Real Betis in April 2023 as a 15-year-old, and he had an incredible start to his career.
He joined the Spain team in September, and just minutes into his debut on the international scene, he scored in a 7-1 thumping of Georgia in Euro 2024 qualifying.
After that, he continued to grow and scored an incredible goal to help La Roja defeat the home team, France, 2-1 in the European Championship semifinals.
This season, Flick hopes that his progress at the club level can continue and result in more hardware.
The 59-year-old will face a team that did not win a trophy in 2023–2024.
However, he has personally experienced a great deal of title-winning success, leading Bayern Munich to an unprecedented sextuple.
He said he hopes to see more of the same in Spain: “What I want to see is that we are playing really good football, attacking football, and that everyone can see that this team really gives a lot for this club.
“I think this is crucial.”
“You can only win with the biggest clubs, which is why I am here. I am not saying that I will win every title like that but if we work hard we can achieve this.”
Real Madrid has added Luka Modric to its roster for another season after he agreed to extend the contract through June 2025. The 38-year-old, regarded as one of the best players in the team’s history, has moved to the Santiago Bernabeu and is now more of a reserve. In May, he stated that he still had the “physique” to play, indicating his intention to retire at Real Madrid.
Real Madrid, the reigning European champions, have extended Luka Modric’s contract, allowing him to remain with the team until June 2025.
Croatia’s 38-year-old midfielder’s contract was supposed to expire this summer, but he has decided to extend it by one more year.
Six UEFA Champions Leagues and four La Liga championships are among the 26 titles that Modric has won at the Santiago Bernabeu since moving to Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012.
In 2018, Modric won the Ballon d’Or after leading Croatia to the World Cup final, where they were defeated by France.
Modric’s role at Real Madrid changed during the previous campaign as he began to play more of a reserve role.
In 46 games for Madrid in the 2023–2024 season, he recorded two goals and six assists, with many of those coming off the bench.
Modric stated at the end of the season that he would like to finish his career with Real Madrid.
“I have always said that I would like to retire at Real Madrid,” he told Spanish radio COPE in May.
“It would be a dream to retire at home, at the club of my life, and I hope that happens. I have the physique and football to continue in the elite, I have no doubt.”
Modric’s longtime midfield partner, Toni Kroos, has already announced his retirement from football. He played his last game for Germany in the quarterfinals of Euro 2024, where they lost to Spain.
