Kylian Mbappe scored a stunning brace as Real Madrid defeated Real Betis 2-0, marking his first goals in La Liga since joining from PSG. The 25-year-old had previously netted in Real Madrid’s UEFA Super Cup victory against Atalanta. With this win, Carlo Ancelotti’s team climbed to second in the Liga table with eight points. At the same time, Barcelona leads with 12 after four matches.
After struggling to find the net in Madrid’s opening three league games, Mbappe discovered his form in the second half, scoring two goals within eight minutes. He opened the scoring by finishing off an exquisite flick from Federico Valverde. Then he converted a penalty following a foul on Vinicius Junior, with the penalty granted following a VAR review overturning an initial offside call.
Vinicius was exceptional in the second half, nearly scoring himself with a deflected shot that hit the woodwork. Betis, who showed promise in the first half, struggled to respond after Mbappe’s double and failed to threaten Madrid significantly.
The visitors had a chance early on when Abde Ezzalzouli missed a header that should have been on target. Madrid responded ten minutes later, with Eder Militao’s header saved by Rui Silva, but he poked the follow-up wide. Mbappe also misfired on a cutback from Vinicius, but it was in the second half that Madrid indeed found their rhythm.
With a stern team talk from Carlo Ancelotti fresh in their minds, Madrid set the tone early when Vinicius’ deflected shot hit the woodwork. Fortunately for Mbappe, the offside flag spared him as he fired over the rebound.
However, he found his composure in the 67th minute, netting his first La Liga goal by calmly finishing past Rui Silva after some exquisite play from Valverde. Silva believed he had escaped punishment after bringing down Vinicius soon after. Still, VAR confirmed that Madrid’s attacker had been onside before the foul, allowing Mbappe to convert the resulting penalty without hesitation to secure the win.
Before scoring, Mbappe had taken 24 shots in La Liga, with eight on target, six off, and then blocked. For the first hour, it seemed like his wait for a goal might extend until after the international break. Still, when his opportunity arose, he kept his cool to beat Silva and calmly converted the penalty. Now, he’s finally up and running.
While Vinicius deserves a special mention for his impressive second-half performance, Mbappe takes the accolade. He became the fourth Madrid player in the 21st century to score his first two La Liga goals in the same match, joining the ranks of Ronaldo Nazario, Javier Hernandez, Dani Ceballos, and Ruud van Nistelrooy, who notably scored a hat-trick.
