Real Madrid edged closer to the La Liga title with a 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad, thanks to a goal from young talent Arda Güler. Despite resting many key players ahead of their UEFA Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich, Carlo Ancelotti’s side delivered a solid performance.
Sociedad held the majority of possession but struggled to create clear chances. When Real Madrid did get an opportunity in the first half, Güler capitalized, scoring on his full debut with a well-placed finish from Dani Carvajal’s cross.
Sociedad thought they had equalized moments later when Take Kubo found the net. Still, the goal was disallowed for a foul on Aurelien Tchouameni. Real Madrid faced little pressure in the second half, and the win kept them 14 points ahead of second-place Barcelona. They are on the verge of clinching the championship with just two more matches, while Sociedad remains in sixth place.
Carlo Ancelotti’s 18-month stint at Everton stands out in his coaching career. After being appointed in December 2019, his team finished in the bottom half during his first season, and in his only entire season, they managed a 10th-place finish—far from the title challenges he’s typically led.
In tonight’s match, Ancelotti fielded a second-string Real Madrid side that entered as the betting underdog for one of the first times since his return to the club. They faced a Sociedad team that dominated possession, reminiscent of the challenges he encountered while managing at Goodison Park.
Ancelotti’s first-choice XI demonstrated resilience against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, and his lesser-known players showed similar defensive prowess against Sociedad. You could sense Ancelotti relished the opportunity to manage a team against the odds. With experienced players like Dani Carvajal and Luka Modric guiding the way, his side executed their game plan effectively, stifling Sociedad’s attacks and threatening to score more on the counter.
Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid) – While Real Madrid boasts a wealth of talent, an orthodox right-back like Carvajal often flies under the radar. However, attentive fans have noted that, after Jude Bellingham, he may be the team’s most consistent performer this season. He delivered another solid performance tonight, including a brilliant first-time assist.
