The San Salvador Beach Soccer Stadium buzzed with enthusiasm and a sense of camaraderie last Friday during the opening ceremony for 30 new social-sports schools established under the LALIGA Values and Opportunity program. This initiative, promoted by INDES and the FUNDACIÓN LALIGA, has been actively expanding its reach throughout the entire Central American nation since its inception in 2019.

Yamil Bukele, the ad honorem president of the National Institute of Sports of El Salvador (INDES), revealed the new locations for the project, which aims to improve the lives of young Salvadorans. The initiative focuses on fostering inclusion, facilitating job placements, providing value-based education, preventing violence, and encouraging entrepreneurship through the medium of football.

The inauguration ceremony saw the participation of officials from INDES, the Ministry of Education, and representatives from the newly launched schools, all coming together to celebrate this significant development.

The newly established schools will be located in a variety of districts, including Coatepeque, Santa Ana, Apaneca, Ahuachapán, Atiquizaya, Izalco, Chalatenango, San Salvador, La Libertad, Sensuntepeque, Tejutepeque, Jutiapa, Ilobasco, Cojutepeque, Apastepeque, Villa El Carmen, San Vicente, San Cayetano, San Miguel, Estanzuela, and San Francisco Gotera.

The event also provided an opportunity to present certificates to 161 newly qualified monitors for the LALIGA Values and Opportunity project. These individuals are now serving as physical education teachers within the national public education system. This initiative ensures that the principles rooted in the positive values of football are not only implemented within the project’s academies but are also disseminated to Salvadoran students, effectively creating a multiplier effect that expands the program’s impact.

Additionally, sports equipment was distributed to a group of enthusiastic boys and girls from the program who were excited to participate in the event. The occasion attracted a sizable crowd eager to learn more about the educational and training initiatives being offered.

Yamil Bukele stressed that “this programme was created with the intention of developing, nurturing, and training productive and good individuals for our society. We are very proud of the objectives achieved since its inception and of all the work and effort being dedicated for the benefit of our youth”.

Since its launch in 2019, the LALIGA Values and Opportunity program has made substantial strides in promoting sports and education in El Salvador. Over this period, the initiative has successfully established a total of 213 socio-sports schools, extending its reach to every region in the country. These schools aim to provide a structured environment where young individuals can benefit not only from physical education but also from the positive values instilled through sports. The program’s impact is substantial, as it has directly improved the lives of 278,603 children, offering them opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive both on and off the field. By prioritizing inclusive education and positive development, these schools are creating a brighter future for Salvadoran youth.

In the past four years, the program’s dedication to developing qualified coaches has also been evident through its impressive tally of 4,536 training sessions. These sessions are not only designed to enhance coaching techniques but also focus on imparting critical life skills and values to young athletes. As a result, the initiative has trained and certified over 900 coaches who are now equipped to guide and mentor aspiring players across the nation. Additionally, the program has organized 14 specialized camps, offering unique learning experiences to more than 700 young participants. These camps provide a platform for children to refine their skills, foster teamwork, and build lasting connections with their peers.

LALIGA Values and Opportunity stands out as a leading global model for sport-for-development initiatives, gaining recognition for its substantial impact in both quantitative and qualitative terms. The program has not only excelled in reaching large numbers of children and coaches but has also been effective in instilling values such as teamwork, respect, and perseverance. Furthermore, it is celebrated for its exceptional efficiency in resource allocation and implementation, ensuring that investments are optimized to benefit the greatest number of young individuals. This combination of comprehensive impact and strategic execution underscores why LALIGA Values and Opportunity is regarded as an exemplary initiative in the realm of sports and youth development worldwide.
