Sporting manager Ruben Amorim has acknowledged that he cannot guarantee his continued tenure at the club for the next season. Although he is under contract with Sporting CP until 2026, there has been growing speculation regarding his future, particularly as he is viewed as a potential successor to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool when the latter eventually departs. This uncertainty comes at a pivotal moment for the team, as they prepare to face their fierce rivals, Benfica, in a crucial top-of-the-table clash that could significantly impact their title aspirations.
Amorim’s comments reflect the challenges and pressures that come with management at high-profile clubs, where success on the pitch can often lead to opportunities elsewhere. As he navigates the immediate demands of the upcoming match, his future remains a topic of interest not only for fans and the media but also for clubs looking to strengthen their coaching staff. The outcome of the Benfica match may play a role in shaping his legacy at Sporting, further complicating the decisions he will need to make in the near future.
Sporting boss Ruben Amorim has confessed he “cannot make any guarantees” that he will remain the club’s manager next season.
Ruben Amorim has emerged as a leading candidate to take over at Liverpool, with reports suggesting that the Portuguese coach is a top target for succeeding Jurgen Klopp. Klopp, who has been at the helm of the Merseyside club for nearly a decade, is expected to depart in the summer. During his nine-year tenure, Klopp transformed Liverpool into one of Europe’s most formidable teams, winning major trophies including the Premier League and Champions League. Currently managing Sporting CP, Amorim is seen as a solid option for continuing Klopp’s legacy and guiding Liverpool through the next phase of their journey.
The Portuguese manager has emerged as a leading contender for the Liverpool job after Xabi Alonso pledged his future to Bayer Leverkusen last week.
“I cannot make any guarantees [that I will stay at Sporting next season], “Amorim, who led Sporting to the Portuguese league title in the 2020-21 season, stated to reporters on Friday.
“Sporting are dealing with their future and I can’t decide now because I gave my word, I can’t go back on that, so if I don’t win trophies, I’m going to leave Sporting.
“That’s been very clear since the start. I felt it was important to get that across to the players because we have to win. We want to win trophies and we’ll decide on those things later.
“I’m not worried about that right now. The future has been planned for quite a long time. We’re all together as a club and looking into all situations and what we want for next season, so that’s the main reason why I can’t guarantee anything.
“I said that to my players and as the leader I can’t go back on my word, as hard as that may be. We have to win trophies, we’re on track to do that and that’s why it’s so important to win our next game.”
Amorim is attracting interest from clubs both in Portugal and abroad. Currently under contract with Sporting until 2026, he could reportedly be available to Liverpool for €15 million (£12 million).
With Sporting sitting at the top of the league and preparing to face second-placed Benfica on Saturday evening, Amorim has stated that his focus is on the match rather than his future.
“I don’t want to be talking too much about my future,” he remarked.
“The focus is on the game. But I can say that I won’t argue or put any pressure on Sporting, I owe the club a lot and what will happen, will happen. But there won’t ever be any pressure from me towards the club because I owe a lot to Sporting.
“I’m very happy here and I just wanted to clarify that. The focus is on the game because we want to win titles.”
