Sporting CP welcomes Lille for the opening night of the Champions League. The Portuguese champions have won this season in all five Primeira Liga matches. Meanwhile, Lille comes into this matchup having faced three consecutive defeats.
Ruben Amorim’s Sporting clinched the Primeira Liga title in 2023-24 and have started the current season strongly in their title defense. They have won all five league matches, scoring an impressive 19 goals while conceding just two.
Sporting has never advanced past the last 16 of the Champions League. Still, they aim to change that this season, particularly with the in-form striker Viktor Gyokeres at the forefront.
Likewise, Lille has yet to reach the quarter-finals of Europe’s top competition, with their last exit occurring in the 2022/23 group stage. They enter this year’s Champions League campaign uncertainly, losing their last three matches across all competitions, including a recent 1-0 defeat to Saint-Étienne away from home.

Sporting has relatively few injury concerns ahead of their Champions League match. Still, they will be without two goalkeepers, Vladan Kovacevic and young Diogo Pinto, along with defender Jeremiah St. Juste, also receiving treatment.
There’s no doubt that Swedish forward Gyokeres will play a significant role on Tuesday. He has already netted eight goals in five league matches. At the same time, the influential Pedro Gonçalves has been a crucial playmaker, contributing four goals and three assists.
Sporting CP Predicted Lineup vs. Lille (3-4-3): Israel; Debast, Inácio, Diomande; Catamo, Bragança, Hjulmand, Santos; Trincão, Gyokeres, Gonçalves.
Lille is dealing with their own injury issues. It will be without Ngal’ayel Mukau, Samuel Umtiti, Ismaily, and Hakon Haraldsson for their trip to Lisbon. Additionally, Ethan Mbappé, Kylian’s brother, is doubtful after missing Friday’s defeat due to injury.
Former Benfica midfielder André Gomes may start in midfield while ex-Sporting youth product Tiago Santos is also a potential choice at wing-back. However, Jonathan David is the real danger for Lille, having played a key role in their qualification against Slavia Prague.
Ángel Gomes, whose father played for Portugal’s Under-21 team, made his England debut during the recent international break and is expected to play a role in midfield.
Lille Predicted Lineup vs. Sporting CP (3-4-3): Chevalier; Meunier, Diakité, Ribeiro; Santos, André, Ángel Gomes, Gudmundsson; Zhegrova, David, Sahraoui.
Sporting is the clear favorite for Tuesday’s match, thanks to its early-season solid performance and excellent home record. It has not lost at Estádio José Alvalade since its narrow defeat to eventual Europa League winners Atalanta last October.
With Gyokeres, Sporting boasts one of Europe’s most formidable strikers, supported by the in-form Gonçalves and Francisco Trincão on either side. Lille began the season positively, but their three consecutive defeats could extend to four on Tuesday.
Prediction: Sporting CP 2-0 Lille
